Multiple Factors by Holly D. Gray

Date: Saturday December 1, 2018 through Sunday January 27, 2019.
Time: 12:00 am
Location: Life in Deep Ellum
Address: 2803 Taylor Street
Price: Free
Category: Arts / Exhibits
The role of caregiver, predominately assumed by women, is the inspiration and basis for the exhibition titled, Multiple Factors. While creating these works, I was thinking about my role as a female caregiver and what that means to me personally, but also what that might look like for the mothers of medically fragile children that happen to be so similar to myself. With this identity, I was absorbed in the daily labor both physical and emotional for these women.

I tend to collect objects over a measured and set amount of time, and I enjoy giving myself specific time restrictions for my practice. I hope that this is one way that the act of repetitive labor can come through in my work. With the specifics of time and volume, the One Day Project refers to a 24-hour period of collection from thirteen different mothers and their disabled children, that are located across the United States. 52 weeks refers to the weeks of a year and this piece was created by my personal weekly collections as a memorial to the year gone by.

The subject matter of my work is the daily detritus or waste material that comes with the life of a medically fragile child. The female caregivers, mothers in most cases, fight for these supplies on numerous levels and use this material in hopes that it will be part of the puzzle to keep their child alive one more day. Without these mundane daily rituals, their children and mine would not survive. And with this subject, Im left to think about the moment to moment that ends up being a tremendous weight in this type of caregiving.

The materials that I use for these works are rooted in the daily care for children with multiple disabilities. By using photography as a material to transform what would be considered in most cases trash; Im able to document a moment in time that is fleeting for the families involved. With the use of ceramic sculpture for the installation 52 Weeks, the forms offer a fragility and softness that the source plastics cannot achieve.

There is an elegance in this type of caregiving that most dont see. Theres a light in its brokenness. After all, this is a parent and child relationship. Light in Nurture references the collection of source material in a unique way. My intent with these images is to add beauty to the perceived brokenness. Society and politics often view disability as a tragedy or a drain on resources. A life lived atypically is often related to strain and stress, but there is a calmness, strength, grace, and resilience that come from this community of women. For myself, Ive had the same routine for eleven years with my daughter, so the daily practice of this core group of women is fiercely important to my artwork.

Time: 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Location: PDNB Gallery
Address: 154 Glass Street, Ste. 104, Dallas, TX 75207

Category: Arts / Exhibits
The aroma of cookies baking in the oven is that familiar scent that conjures memories of your childhood. Suddenly you remember your mom (or dad) pulling the cookies out of the oven, and you are standing there, ready to devour that first warm confection.

Paul Sokal has been collecting old relics from his childhood, and not too recent past. These objects are his subject matter for this series, Before iPhone. Like that scent of baking cookies, these objects from a time machine trigger memories of the analog culture many of us grew up with. Sokal states, The pace of life was more patient and communication was spoken face to face, rather than texted across a room, when it was easier to connect across the dining table than across the world.

In a studio setting, Sokal places these archetypal relics against a stark white background. The resulting photograph is presented in a large color print. The 1960s Princess model telephone has a vibrant yellow color that was much a part of Pop culture. Seen in a large size, it is even more vivid and eye-catching.

Recently this series was exhibited at the Grace Museum in Abilene, Texas. This is the first time Paul Sokals photographs have been exhibited at PDNB Gallery. Sokal was born in 1953 and grew up in Williamsville, NY, a suburb of Buffalo. Since a 25-year hiatus pursuing his medical career, he has been actively working in photography, receiving recognition through various local and national juried shows.

DELILAH MONTOYA: The New Warriors

Date: Saturday November 17, 2018 through Saturday December 29, 2018.
Time: 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Location: PDNB Gallery
Address: 154 Glass Street, St. 104, Dallas, TX 75207
Price: Free
Category: Arts / Exhibits
A recent exhibition at MOMAs PS1, Body Armor, featured four women artists that conveyed expressions of power and identity, through their garments, or objects worn, to define femininity. This exhibition coincided with the current #MeToo movement, which will be one of many in the future to address this cultural phenomenon.

Delilah Montoya's photographs were represented in this PS1 show. The series featured was her notable New Warriors series, a document of female boxers from the Southwest. PDNB Gallery is exhibiting these photographs this November-December.

It is a rather momentous time in America, not to be ignored. Imagine the slow, but sure progress of women. For example, in sports, Title IX gave women more equality in sports. Womens boxing became a reality in the sports world when the International Womens Boxing Federation (IWBF) formed in 1992.

Montoya sees these women as malcriadas, defined as an ill-mannered servant or bad girl. In her interpretation, the boxers are going against the rules of the female profile. These women dictate what they desire. The young women, who lead many roles, as mother, wife, employee and athlete, find time to pursue their dream to be a professional boxer. Their serious participation involves daily workouts in the gym, taking hits like a man, and building muscles and endurance.

What motivates them to participate in such a male dominated sport? There are a multitude of reasons. Like men, these women are competitive. Like men, they love the one-on-one action sport. Like men, they want to be strong. But unlike men, they have to fight harder to be taken seriously.

Delilahs photographs, although executed between 2003-2005, contribute to our currently challenged perception of womanhood.

Multiple Factors by Holly D. Gray

Date: Saturday December 1, 2018 through Sunday January 27, 2019.
Time: 12:00 am
Location: Life in Deep Ellum
Address: 2803 Taylor Street

Location: PDNB Gallery
Address: 154 Glass Street, Ste. 104, Dallas, TX 75207

PAUL SOKAL: Before iPhone
