Sneak Peek:
Dr. Njoki McElroy gives us a glimpse into life in Freedman's Town in the 1930s when black people carved out a safe place for their families and businesses to thrive. Donald Payton came of age when Dallas was still rigidly segregated then slowly witnessed the city allowing for improved conditions for black people and the desegregation of institutions. Alice Basey talks about the the daily travails of being black in Dallas from being evicted from affordable housing to make way for luxury buildings to just trying to use the restroom in a restaurant while black. Dana Proulx-Willis weaves a surprising tale of growing up in Dallas as a privileged white person with a shocking family secret that explains her brother's darker skin and Afro. Heika Smith throws the covers off of her family's attitudes about black people in order for her to heal and to pass on a different set of values to her own children. Jane Terrell grew up as a mixed child in England but has lived her adult life in America- she takes us to school regarding the stark difference in racism in the two countries. Jeremy Bonner gives a riveting firsthand account of his friendship with Botham Jean and the heartbreaking story of the night Botham's beloved sister received the call from the hospital saying that Botham had been shot in his apartment and had succumbed to his injuries.

The exhibit also explores other presidential retreats over the last two centuries from Mount Vernon to Mar-a-Lago.

The hidden historic roles of presidential retreats includes stories of the presidents and first ladies daily lives, hobbies, sports, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Visitors will learn about the specific initiatives, challenges, and accomplishments that made each retreat iconic as well as the intimate family memories that endear these unique locations to their occupants. This also includes the Bush familys use of presidential spaces - for weddings, holidays, and more.

A Path Less Taken is the first solo exhibition for Dallas based artist and native, Nicolas Gonzalez. Featuring work from the last 11 years, it begins with his studies as an art student at Brookhaven Community College, undergraduate art career at Southern Methodist University and current work as Co-Founder of Gallery 86. A Path Less Taken highlights Nics dexterity with different mediums while tackling concepts such as narratives, systems, observations and how they manifest in life and our culture. His ambition and passion for the arts and creating shines through in this self-reflective collection of work. Pursuing art, despite the cultural and financial barriers he faced, opened many doors for Gonzalez and helped him realize his role within his community. This work is meant to move those who feel an artistic inkling to action and encourage them to explore their creative notions. Its designed to rally the spirits of viewers, artists and non-artists alike, to beat the odds against them. Through drawing, painting, and sculpture, Nicolas hopes to awaken the viewers artistic sensibilities and honor those who have galvanized him as a visual artist.
