ex ovo is pleased to present Michael Uttaro: En Route, the New York-based artists first exhibition in Texas. For En Route, Uttaro presents two bodies of work: a series of intimate abstractions in oil pastel and ink on paper, and large-scale, digitally-collaged panoramic photographs tracing labyrinthine walks. Both the paintings and photographs emphasize the artists acute sense of the passage of time--the progressive inertia of the universe, the relativity of objectivity, an effort to bridge the gap between the time of making and the time of viewing. Michael Uttaro received an BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Art and Science and an MFA from Brooklyn College, he has shown in galleries in New York, Glasgow, Scotland, Kyoto, Japan, and Jerome, AZ. This is his first exhibition in Texas.

A new solo exhibition show from artist Hannah Aaron.

Statement from the artist:
Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; Psalm 144:1

My work is about reclaiming my feminine identity which had been previously shaped by societal pressures and experiences from childhood. I danced for nine years in ballet classes, which now serves as the source imagery for my oil paintings. As a young girl, I struggled with feeling good enough. The treatment of the slippers in my paintings are evocative of the obsessive perfectionism, crippling anxiety, and overwhelming pressure I felt in my youth. My affiliation between perfection, performance and intrinsic value followed me into adulthood, clouding my perspective of femininity. Describing boxing gloves serve as a counter perspective, sourced from Biblical scriptures. In a way, painting them serve as a form of therapy, prayer, and declaration of self-worth to my present reality. For me, the fight is not a physical one, but a spiritual and mental one. My fight looks rewriting the narrative of my past and agreeing with Gods thought towards me, which is this: I am valuable. And that will never change. Painting from life is important to me. When I paint from a still life arrangement or a figure model, my interaction with the object or person keeps my thoughts in the present moment, rather than dwelling on the past. The application of my paintings include areas of refinement, nuances in cast shadows and reflected light, as well as expressive line work, dry brush and thick impasto.

Allyson Packer: Sounding

Time: Times Vary
Location: The Hawn Gallery at the Hamon Arts Library, Southern Methodist University
Address: 6100 Hillcrest Ave, Dallas, TX 75275
Price: Free
Category: Arts / Exhibits
There are three ways to measure a body of water: by surface area, volume, or depth. Sounding is the term used to describe this last method. Unlike assessing a visible surface area, sounding is an act of remote sensing. It allows you to gather information on something you cant make physical contact with. The contents in a library are like a body of water. It holds a volume of material within a clearly defined space, while also possessing a kind of impalpable depth.

In Sounding, Packer uses text and sculptural interventions to explore the relationship between the librarys known and unknowable qualities. Through this artwork, the Hawn Gallery and Hamon Arts Librarys tangible architectural spaces become a framework to plumb the immeasurable depths of knowledge the building contains.

Allyson Packer makes artwork that engages viewers in examining the myths and values embedded in the built environment. Her installations and performances have been shown at Nahmad Projects (London), Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago), and Birds + Richard (Berlin), among other venues. Her upcoming solo exhibition, Inland Sea, will open at the Las
Cruces Art Museums Brannigan Cultural Center in July 2020. Packer earned her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She lives in Denton, Texas, where she is a faculty member in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas.

Address: 414 Fabrication St, Dallas, TX . 75212

ex ovo is pleased to present Michael Uttaro: En Route, the New York-based artists first exhibition in Texas. This is his first exhibition in Texas.

ex ovo hosts an opening reception with the artist on Saturday, January 18 from 6:00 - 8:30 pm.

ex ovo is pleased to present Michael Uttaro: En Route, the New York-based artists first exhibition in Texas. This is his first exhibition in Texas.

ex ovo hosts an opening reception with the artist on Saturday, January 18 from 6:00 - 8:30 pm.

Ghost Stories
Rachel Grobstein
February 22 - March 28, 2020
Meet the Artist/Opening Reception
Feb 22 5:30-8:00pm

Galleri Urbane is proud to introduce Rachel Grobstein (Brooklyn, NY) in her inaugural solo exhibition with the gallery. Ghost Stories presents the latest in an ongoing body of work comprised of small cut paper paintings and miniature sculptures. Expanding on the artists long-standing interest in memory and the accumulation of personal things and objects, this exhibition catalogues items that surround commemoration, grief, and celebration. From small scale roadside memorials to a cut paper scene of objects found in a cemetery, the work contemplates the act of memorializing in an era of mass production/hyper consumption.
Ghost Stories is anchored by a new series of miniature sculptures based on roadside memorials. Many of these works are inspired by actual memorials encountered by the artist, scaled-down and painstakingly crafted using materials like polymer clay, paper, and gouache in a process that has been honed over the last four years. These sidewalk shrines found in urban environments become contemporary cabinets of curiosity where traditional hierarchies of values collapse and meaningful items tangle with roadside debris. In Memorial (Rt 1) (2019), for example, a pair of angel figurines sits adjacent to a pair of beer cans, encapsulating these sites ability to incorporate a wide range of articles from the sacred to the disposable. Containing everything from a discarded Victorias Secret shopping bag to a mound of stuffed animals, these works serve as complicated hybrid portraits of the deceased, those in mourning, and the surrounding community.
Alongside these roadside memorials are a series of small cut paper paintings, delicately mounted on pinheads and installed on the wall in precise arrangements. These works all depict spaces where one confronts the idea of death and memory, emphasizing the conglomeration of stuff that forms in these environments. Removed from their original contexts, the painted images offer a light-hearted take that leans toward the absurd. Bathroom (2019) depicts a solitary toilet dwarfed below a collection of taxidermied animal busts, becoming a humorous throne for the dead. In Haunted House (2019), a constellation of associated images appear to float in space, including a Shining-esque tricycle, ouija board components, and cartoon lightning bolts. The vast range of juxtaposed objects and their resulting shadows weave a whimsical take on the supernatural.
Through her miniature and incredibly detailed objects, Grobstein invites intimate contemplation with a challenging subject matter. By drastically reconfiguring the way one encounters these scenes, the artist presents an archeology of things that exists in the everyday and beyond any divine connotations.

Oh Well
Loring Taoka
February 22 - March 28, 2020
Meet the Artist/Opening Reception
Feb 22 5:30-8:00pm

Returning for his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, Loring Taoka (Fayetteville, AR) presents a new series of 13 paintings in Oh Well. This exhibition reflects a current shift in Taokas studio practice from his well-known paintings on plexiglass to new explorations on panel. Taoka utilizes this updated surface to advance his concerns with ideas of perception, a process that requires developing alternative approaches to communicating the illusion of flat and dimensional space. Significant roles are played by geometric shapes and color choices, altogether creating an experience that requires viewers to question what they are seeing.
Works on plexiglass have been the focus of Taokas previous exhibitions at Galleri Urbane. In these former paintings the artist subtly eschews the picture plane; the clear material nearly disappears and allows one to focus on the works complex geometric shapes. Conversely, the work in Oh Well fully embraces the physical presence of each paintings surface. A new visual language has thus been developed: wherein the paintings on plexiglass create playful dimension through resulting shadows, the creation of space in the paintings on panel fully relies on the controlled application of paint. Taoka forges a depth of field in moments where a blurred gradient meets a hard line. Geometric shapes seemingly slip in and out of focus and appear to occupy multiple layers of foreground, middle ground, and background. These works willingly draw attention to the surface of the painting while expanding into the picture plane.
The simple geometries in these paintings serve as the perfect model for what Taoka sets out to achieve. A straightforward example lies in (untitled - blurry rectangle #2) (2019). A crisp red rectangle extends into a blurred version of itself at its midpoint, ultimately still reading as a singular rectangle. By providing just enough information, Taoka seeks to challenge the audience in how we determine or classify what we see. Color plays an equally important role in challenging the viewer. Some of the color combinations become difficult to look at but serve as invitations for viewers to become more wholly involved in what theyre looking at. An electric combination of orange and blue in (untitled - two blurry rectangles) (2019) animates the paintings surface, requiring dedicated inspection to unpack the works full impact.
Through these carefully crafted geometries and bold color choices, Taoka creates some of his most dynamic paintings to date. He is able to distill his ideas and interests in acts of perception through adopting new methods and materials. The resulting body of work is one that remains true to his previous investigations while introducing a new chapter in the artists practice.

Date: Friday February 7, 2020 through Sunday March 29, 2020.
Time: Times Vary
Location: The Hawn Gallery at the Hamon Arts Library, Southern Methodist University
Address: 6100 Hillcrest Ave, Dallas, TX 75275
